(8) Covers Galore!

I feel sort of guilty - my first post to this community contains over an hour's worth of music! But of course the prompt was covers - and I am a huge cover lover. Next week I might not even have a suggestion, knowing me.

Everybody Hurts: Bodies of Water (website); Original by R.E.M.
I have maybe half a dozen versions of this song, and the Bodies of Water version is the one I always think of. The male/female duet that dominates most of the song is heartfelt, sincere, and yearning, especially when combined with the wailing voices far above. All this, with the slightly slower pace, really transforms R.E.M.'s famous song into a weeping commiseration versus R.E.M.'s more encouraging version.

Thunder Road: Badly Drawn Boy; Original by Bruce Springsteen
Everyone knows Bruce Springsteen, right? Well his famous Thunder Road, though in the original song throw-down-what-you-got-and-come-with-me that's-the-way-it-is, is slowed down and smoothed out here; the grounded vocal range and the simple piano melody accompniament turn it into a wonderful love song by Badly Drawn Boy.

White Wedding: the harvey girls (website); Original by Billy Idol
The harvey girls take this fast-paced rock song and turn it into a haunting and sad cry. The original is the long 8:25 min version.

Karma Police: John Vanderslice (stereogum); Original by Radiohead (youtube)
The only song included that I don't have the original for! We're moving out of rock territory here; the John Vanderslice version is a strange mix of floating, electronic arpeggios, and harsh beats and guitar chords, and yet it strangely works.

I Feel Free: Foo Fighters; Original by Cream
I love this Foo Fighters version. It's strong and rocking - almost joyous to me.

Anna Molly: MIT Logarhythms; Original by Incubus
I admit; I am horribly in love with this college a cappella group right now. This is from their CD released at the beginning of the school year, and I bought it in person when they came to my school recently. They are awesome. They appeal to my strict classical background, being perfectly aligned and in tune, something that is woefully rare these days. The singers are amazing, powerful singers. And the song itself is a fast, catchy, rock song - a good song, but not particularly memorable - until you hear the MIT Logarhythms singing it.

Never Let Me Down Again: Tina Root; Original by Depeche Mode
I have a hilarious amount of covers of this song. Tina Root's version is electronic, simple, and somewhat hollow; the words seem to resonate within the beats and harmony, and it works perfectly with the lyrics.

Bohemian Rhapsody: Mnozil Brass (youtube); Original by Queen
We all know this song, right? Well, this cover version has to be seen to be believed. Trust me, it's unbelievably awesome. (Also, I have the sheet music for this song. Anyone who can do it is a god.)

I'd love to hear which ones you guys like - it'll help me picking songs down the road (and plus then I won't bother you guys with electronica if I'm the only one who likes it)

Have fun! And don't forget to support the artists!

Oh, thank you! I grabbed a bunch of the songs. I'm such a sucker for covers. 8D

DUDE that cover of Anna Molly was AMAZING. I'll be hearing this version in my head when I rock out to Guitar Hero now. XD
